Tell TN Lawmakers to stop bullying students from Capitol Hill
Tell TN Lawmakers to stop bullying students from Capitol Hill
The Issue
On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the House Subcommittee on Education passed the "Don't Say G_y" bill (HB0229) to the full House Education Committee.
In its amended form, the bill will silence teachers who are a resource to all their students on the subject of human sexuality. Rep. Bill Dunn on the House Education Subcommittee stated the bill is in line with current K-8 curriculum and is consistent with Title 49. If that's the case, there is no reason to pass this legislation. HB0229 is a solution in search of a problem.
The bill will not improve education in grades K-8 and may in fact send a harmful message to students following the suicides of two students victimized by anti-gay bullying in Tennessee.
Voting in favor of this legislation will promote a hostile environment for students who are or may be perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
Stop the House Education Committee from marginalizing LGBT students in Tennessee. Send them a message to vote no on HB0229.
